The essays selected for inclusion in this volume derive from the first international conference solely dedicated to the study of Hispanic humor, which took place September 29-30, 1995, in Philadelphia, PA. The essays deal with manifestations of humor in literature, film, cartoons, linguistics, art, and popular culture, and treat themes from the Middle Ages to the present in Spain, Latin America, and the United States. The scope of this collection affirms the important role of humor in Hispanic culture, a topic which had been previously been under appreciated in Hispanic studies.
